Girt (bysea): Solstice
One-night-only outdoor installation and free event
Join us on the longest night of the year for a unique, immersive installation that explores the fragile threshold between land and sea.
Girt (bysea): Solstice weaves together themes of environmental responsibility, folklore, and place—set against the vast truth that Australia is more ocean than continent. Where land meets water, identity is shaped. This edge—now shifting due to climate change—affects not only us, but the countless plants, animals, and communities who dwell there.
Drawing from both personal heritage (Danish and Irish mermaid lore) and local coastal narratives, this work invites us to imagine mythical sea-dwellers not as fantasy, but as guardians in the unfolding climate story—symbols of resilience and belonging for marine life.
The installations explore many elements of the edge where we meet the sea...including mangroves and rock pools, cliff tops to the liminal tidal zones and we are asked to contemplate this place that shapes us and that we have shaped, for better and worse, in turn.
The Solstice...one of the nights the tides can reach into the salty blood that gives us life.
